2025 THESIS PROJECT

THESIS STATEMENT:

The world-building of 'Treasures' is based on my research that explored design stylings across both Europe and the United States during the early 1900’s. Through this exploration, I came to recognize the evolution of classic design tropes, particularly that of Bauhaus and Art Deco. This era included a focus on asymmetrical and geometric line work, and both styles were created as responses to industrialization. Bauhaus emphasized function over form, but Art Deco served as the opposite. Both of these movements influenced pop-culture media such as Batman (1939,) which connects to my life-long appreciation for the comic book medium of storytelling. My comic’s world-building was inspired by the two aforementioned movements and connect Treasures to my own Eastern European heritage with Bauhaus’ creation in Germany, and Art Deco’s origins in France.

My comic 'Treasures' incorporates elements of Sci-Fi mixed with the tropes found within comic books and Japanese manga and anime. The narrative focuses on the protagonist, Rachel, and her journey of self-improvement. She lives in a futuristic Earth filled with cybernetic enhancements that are a mix of older design elements and modern-day science. Treasures follows Rachel, her friends, and rivals as they struggle to make a living in a world that has become less accommodating due to environmental factors. The characters embody an optimistic human spirit through empathetic, humorous, existential, and adventurous experiences. The goal of my Thesis is to inspire others while creating a piece of media a younger version of myself would have wanted to read for comfort.

The world design of 'Treasures' is inspired by my research and the industrialized machine era of Bauhaus. Emphasizing clean lines, minimal ornamentation, and functionality. This resulted in cybernetic elements that I combined with a diverse array of body types, ethnicities, and unique personalities. This project is a collection of inspirations I have felt as an artist consistently through-out my formative education and youth. I am looking at my own past and reflecting upon how it impacts the present, and the eventual future.
